One of the options that more interest is waking up in the world of Smartphone user identification is the of Biometrics, with the reading of fingerprint to the head. However, today the few models that have come on the market with this feature have the serious problem of be in two dimensions.
What does this mean? Because as discussed from the universities of California, Davis and Berkeley, which is possible with a bit of expertise mislead the sensor capacitive current phones with little more than a franatto carried out on suitable material.
To avoid this, these three schools have long working on an alternative system of identification by fingerprints that can better see the peculiarities of the user thanks to the recognition in 3D of your footprint.
A chip of ultrasound to map our fingers
The idea is to introduce a system capable of generating a series of ultrasound, similar to employees in medicine but one much smaller, that ratchet the finger of the user in the mobile and develop a 3D map of the valleys and elevations only their footprint.
The chip responsible for the process would consume only 1.8 volts and would be able to recognize these ultrasonic echoes bounce back with your finger, thus creating the new photocopy-resistant authentication system. Or at least of photocopies in 2D, since I guess that with a printed replica toe 3D (very detailed, that Yes) would return again to the same problem.
For the moment It is only a study, There is no industrial view development, although, given the importance of these systems for identification in mobile terminals, it would not be surprising that soon we will see its practical application.
